TWO MAIN FORMS OF URBANISATION: RAPID VS PLANNED

To give you a bit of background information, there are two main types of urbanisation which take place today. These are: rapid or unplanned urbanisation, and planned urbanisation.

The names are self explanatory but here's a better explanation of the two types of urbanisation and the differences between them:

Rapid urbanisation is when there is a large influx of people from rural to urban areas, in an uncoordinated and unplanned manner. Often times, the city on the receiving end of the migrants, is ill-equipped to deal with so many people, thus putting a heavy burden on existing infrastructure and public transportation systems. This form of urbanisation often results in negative externalities such as slums, poverty and crime rates.

Planned urbanisation is when the large influx of people from rural areas to urban areas is conducted and managed in a systematic and well-organised manner. This includes proper spending and investment towards infrastructure, utilities and transport to ensure that the increasing population doesn't prove to be a burden. Planned urbanisation can have positive outcomes such as the creation of new jobs, and the spreading of ideas from people coming from different communities.
